The first Freestyle Chess Grand Slam is underway — a global series played at some of the most striking and exclusive locations the chess world has ever seen. It’s a new kind of tournament, bringing top-level competition to settings where style, atmosphere, and ambition meet.

Feb. 7–14, 2025

Grand Slam I: Weissenhaus, Germany

Vincent Keymer won the 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam in Weissenhaus, overcoming a world-class field on home soil. The event took place at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort — a five-star retreat on the Baltic Sea that combines contemporary comfort with heritage architecture.

Grand Slam II: Paris, France

In April, the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam 2025 made its stop in Paris — a vibrant city of ideas, rhythm, culture and enduring style. There, world number one Magnus Carlsen faced number two Hikaru Nakamura in an evergreen final that lived up to the occasion, with Carlsen emerging as champion once more.

Grand Slam III: Karlsruhe, Germany

In April, the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam continued in Karlsruhe with its first Open event — part of the 3,000-player grenke Freestyle Chess Festival. Magnus Carlsen won all nine games, calling it a performance so strong he may never repeat it — in a field where amateurs and elite competed side by side.

Grand Slam IV: Las Vegas, USA

This July, the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam arrives in Las Vegas — a new chapter for the format where intuition meets calculation. After winning in Paris and Karlsruhe, Magnus Carlsen enters as the man to beat. Under the lights of a city that thrives on risk, the big question is: can he do it again?

Dec. 5-12, 2025

Finale: Cape Town, South Africa

In December 2025, the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam concludes in Cape Town — a city between oceans, mountains, and shifting winds. It’s the final stop of the 2025 tour, where rankings will be settled and one Freestyle Chess champion crowned in a setting as vivid and unpredictable as the format itself.
