Peter has played chess since he was 14. Six years later, he defeated a grandmaster in a weekend tournament in the Netherlands. Later, he managed to score two IM norms, one in 2004 and one in 2014.

In 1999, he graduated in Dutch Language & Literature at the University of Amsterdam. Between 2007 and 2013, he ran the website He was the first ‘vlogger’ of the chess world, making videos at top tournaments a decade before the streamers arrived.

For his critical coverage of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) he won the Special Achievements Award of the Chess Journalists of America (CJA) in 2018. In the summer of 2022, The Guardian’s Leonard Barden described him as “widely regarded as the world’s best chess journalist.”

During 18 years of covering chess, Peter interviewed dozens of grandmasters, played basketball with Magnus Carlsen and interviewed Garry Kasparov at Bobby Fischer’s grave. He is currently a Senior Staff Writer at
